The Middlesex Savings Charitable Foundation proudly named Sandra Robinson, executive director of the Needham Community Council, its 2025 recipient of the John R. Heerwagen Award for Nonprofit Leadership. This award honors nonprofit leaders whose vision, collaboration, and dedication have significantly strengthened their communities.
Sandra has led the Needham Community Council since 2002, during which time she has transformed the organization into a true cornerstone of support for Needham residents. The Council’s mission is simple but powerful — to help people with under-met health, educational, and social needs while promoting volunteerism and a strong sense of community.
Under Sandra’s leadership, the Council has expanded its reach and programming tremendously. Today, it offers a food pantry, transportation program, English language learning classes, tech & tutors program, medical equipment loan closet, thrift store, and the mindful community speaker series. A new dementia caregiver support program will launch this fall — a project that will provide vital support to those caring for loved ones.
Through Sandra’s guidance, the food pantry has grown to serve an average of 354 households each month, while the transportation program now provides over 300 rides monthly to help residents get to medical appointments and essential errands. Beyond programs, Sandra’s leadership has also inspired a huge rise in volunteerism: the Council now has more than 240 active volunteers, a threefold increase since she began.
Sandra’s leadership is marked by her ability to listen, adapt, and act — always putting people at the center of her work. Whether it’s expanding access to resources, building partnerships with local schools and organizations, or rolling up her sleeves alongside volunteers, Sandra embodies what it means to lead with heart.
This award is a wonderful recognition of Sandra’s 23 years of service and the incredible impact she continues to make in our community. Her dedication reminds us all that meaningful change happens when we come together — neighbor to neighbor, with kindness and shared purpose.
