10 Key Tips to Protect Your Identity: Expert Advice from our Fraud Analysis Team

January 28, 2025

Identity theft is a growing concern, and protecting your personal information is more important than ever. As part of Identity Theft Awareness Week, the Middlesex Savings Bank fraud analysis team has compiled expert advice to help you safeguard your identity and keep your accounts secure. Here are 10 essential tips to stay one step ahead of scammers:

1. Never Share Your Secure Access Code

If you’re an online banking customer, we may send you a secure access code via text or email to verify your identity. This code is for your use only—we will never ask for it. If someone requests it, even if they claim to be from the bank, it’s a scam. Learn more about online and mobile fraud protections.

2. Protect Your Social Security Number

Avoid giving out your full Social Security number unless absolutely necessary and you have verified the legitimacy of the request. Receive a text or email claiming to be your bank asking for your full social security number? Don’t respond. Instead, call us using the trusted phone number on the back of your debit card or statement to confirm the request’s legitimacy.

3. Verify Suspicious Communications

Be cautious of unexpected calls, emails, or texts claiming to be from your bank. Scammers often impersonate banks to gain your trust. Always verify by contacting us directly — not at the phone number provided in the message.

4. Don’t Click on Suspicious Links

Fraudulent texts or emails often include links to fake websites designed to steal your information. If you receive a message claiming to be from Middlesex Savings Bank, avoid clicking on any links. Instead, open your browser and go directly to www.middlesexbank.com to log in securely, or use the MSB Mobile app to verify any account alerts or messages. Learn more about common scams.

5. Beware of Urgent Requests

If someone claiming to be from the bank tells you to keep the matter confidential or not to speak to anyone, this is a red flag. Legitimate banks will never pressure you into secrecy.

6. Be Cautious on Social Media

Scammers often use seemingly innocent social media posts—like “fun” quizzes or “get to know you” games—to gather personal information. Avoid answering questions that reveal details like your pet’s name, favorite color, or childhood memories, as these are often used in password recovery.

7. Use Strong and Unique Passwords

Create strong passwords for your accounts by combining uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols. Avoid using easily guessed information, such as your birthdate, and never reuse passwords across multiple accounts.

8. Monitor Your Accounts Regularly

Check your bank and credit card statements frequently for unauthorized transactions. Many identity theft cases are caught early through diligent monitoring. Set up alerts for your accounts to stay informed of any suspicious activity.

9. Shred Personal Documents

Don’t toss bank statements, bills, or other documents with personal information into the trash. Shred them before disposal to prevent dumpster divers from accessing your data.

10. Keep Your Devices Secure

Ensure your devices are protected with antivirus software and firewalls. Update your operating systems and apps regularly to patch security vulnerabilities. Also, avoid using public Wi-Fi for online banking unless connected through a secure VPN. Learn more about securing your devices.
