Beware of Voice Cloning Scams: How AI Is Changing Fraud Tactics

October 29, 2025

Technology is evolving rapidly, and while many innovations make our lives easier, they also open the door for new types of scams. One of the latest threats making headlines is voice cloning fraud — a form of scam that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to mimic a person’s voice with startling accuracy.

What Is AI Voice Cloning — and How Does It Work?

Voice cloning uses machine learning and deepfake technology to analyze short recordings of a person’s voice — sometimes only a few seconds long — and reproduce digitally. The AI model studies tone, pitch, accent, and speech patterns to generate a clone that can sound exactly like the real person.

Scammers often gather these voice samples from social media posts, YouTube videos, or even voicemail greetings. Once they have enough data, they can type out or record any message and have it spoken in that person’s cloned voice — all within minutes.

Once they have the cloned voice, scammers may call or message targets pretending to be a relative, friend, or even a coworker, often spinning an urgent story about an emergency. These calls are designed to trigger panic — for example, claiming a loved one has been in an accident or needs money immediately for bail or travel expenses.

How to Protect Yourself

Protecting yourself and your loved ones from voice cloning scams starts with awareness and a few simple habits:

  • Create a safe word or phrase: Share a unique word or phrase with close family members and friends that can be used to confirm the identity of a caller during emergencies.
  • Limit your voice online: Be cautious about posting voice recordings or videos publicly on social media, where scammers can easily access and replicate your voice.
  • Stay calm and verify: If you receive a call that feels suspicious — even if the voice sounds familiar — hang up and call the person directly using a known number.
  • Be cautious with requests for money or personal information: Remember, most banks — including Middlesex Savings Bank — will never initiate a call asking for your account details, passwords, or verification codes.
  • When in doubt, contact us directly: If you ever receive a call claiming to be from the bank and you’re unsure, hang up and call our Contact Center to verify.
