Protecting Yourself from Mail-Related Check Fraud

March 24, 2022
With mail-related check fraud on the rise, Middlesex Savings Bank would like to make customers aware of the issue and provide tips on how to protect yourself from becoming a victim.

Envelopes containing checks are being stolen out of mailboxes with a technique known as mailbox phishing. Thieves are dropping various items inside blue collection mailboxes with the hopes of catching envelopes containing personal information and checks. Using a sticky substance such as glue or tape, thieves adhere plastic bottles, cardboard, or other collection devices on a line inside the mailbox. After catching the mail, thieves fish out the envelopes containing checks and alter them to make fraudulent payments.

According to the USPS, there are several ways to protect yourself from becoming a victim of mailbox phishing, including:
  • Promptly picking up mail from your home mailbox.
  • Depositing outgoing mail in blue collection mailboxes close to a pickup time.
  • Being on the lookout for suspicious substances outside of the mailbox that may be used to adhere plastic bottles, cardboard, or other collection devices inside.
  • Dropping off your mail inside the post office.
If you are a victim or have witnessed mail-related crime, you may report it directly to Postal Inspectors.
