Fraudulent E-mail Warning

Please be aware that a representative from Middlesex Savings Bank will not call you or send an e-mail requesting personal confidential information, including your Middlesex Savings Bank account number, Personal Identification Numbers, Online Banking passwords or any other sensitive information.

Please read the following information that we received from the FDIC to warn consumers about a fraudulent e-mail:

FDIC and Other Banking Agencies Act Quickly to Alert Banks on PATRIOT Act E-mail Scam

In less than three hours after receiving complaints from their Consumer Call Centers in Missouri and Washington, D.C., the FDIC issued a Special Alert that there had been fictitious e-mails to financial institution customers, fraudulently claiming to be from the OCC and FDIC in an attempt to obtain sensitive personal and bank account information.

Specifically, on January 23, 2004, the OCC and the FDIC began receiving complaints from consumers who received an e-mail that appeared to be sent from those agencies.  According to the Alert:

The e-mail stated that the Director of the Department of Homeland Security has advised the FDIC to suspend all deposit insurance on the e-mail recipient's bank account due to suspected violations of the USA PATRIOT Act. The e-mail further falsely states that deposit insurance will be suspended until personal identity, including bank account information, can be verified.

The Alert went on to instruct recipients to "NOT access the link provided within the body of the email and should NOT provide any personal information to the sender of the e-mail."

The FDIC has succeeded in having the website shut down.

For these and future e-mail scams of this nature, consumers should report these fraudulent practices by going to the Internet Fraud Complaint Center Web site at:  http://www.ifccfbi.gov/index.asp and follow the instructions for filing a complaint.  In addition, the FDIC has asked that copies be sent to:  alert@fdic.gov.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact a Middlesex Savings Bank customer service representative at 1-877-463-6287.  Thank you for your cooperation.
